In Discussion With Sam Janse van Rensburg

As part of International Women's Day, we speak to our team to discuss what it's like for women working in tech.

Sam is Business Development Manager in the UK.

Tell us a bit about yourself –
Originally from South-Africa, I moved to the U.K as a teenager and completed my education here. In addition to an interest in Technology I am also a great lover of the arts and in my spare time attend a host of events which I have voluntarily worked at and on occasion helped organize. I furthermore have a keen interest in travel, outdoor activities and enjoy getting creative in the kitchen.

How did you get into tech? – My older brother was into technology in a big way growing up which influenced my interest significantly. In my twenties I got a job at Amazon.co.uk and later ended up working in my first sales job for a Technology Distributor based in London. It was soon evident that my passion for technology matched a passion for sales and the rest as they say is history. I find it a great and exciting industry to be part of.

Do you feel that women are supported in tech? – I think there has been very positive progress in people’s attitudes in recent years, however, there is still a great deal more that can be done to encourage women to feel more confident in what was traditionally a more male dominant industry. I believe things are heading in the right direction though to achieve this.

What’s your favourite thing about your job? – The element of always learning and seeing how technology evolves with the times. I think the social element of my job is also very rewarding and I have been lucky enough to meet and work with some amazing people in my career so far.

Do you have any tips for other women wanting to start a career in tech? Go for it and believe in yourself and your abilities. I think women underestimate how much value they can bring to an industry that is forward-thinking and can only be even more successful by bringing in diverse ideas and talent.
